which covers an
area of 283 square kilometres. Kos is the |
| .
third largest of the
Dodecanese after Rhodes and Karpathos. |
Kos is situated
between Kalymnos and Nissiros, opposite |
the south western
coast of Asia Minor. Kos is a popular |
tourist
destination thanks to its good climate, natural beauty, |

Kos is also the
birthplace of Hippocrates, the father of |
Medicine.
Hippocrates was
born on Kos in 460 BC. He |
was well known
for his "modern method" of diagnosis and |
the "Doctors
Oath" which he wrote is still recited by students
entering the
medical profession. According to the legend |
Hippocrates
taught his students under the "Plane Tree", |
which
is considered to be the oldest tree in Europe and |
stands at the
entrance to the Castle of the Knights. |
