EATING
HINTS |
|
| |
Eating good food is
a bonus when we are on holidays, and here in Kos there is a
selection |
|
| |
of tavernas and
restaurants ranging from Chinese, Indian, Mexican, English to
traditional |
|
| |
The Greeks have a
very social way of eating where they order a wide selection of
small |
|
| |
dishes which are
placed in the center of the table for all to share. This is more
commonly |
|
| |
A good start to any
meal is a Greek salad or tzatziki, followed by a variety of
local dishes |
|
| |
including moussaka,
dolmades, lamb, octupus and much, much more. |
|
| |
If you want to
quench your thirst, there is always a good selection of cold
beers, wines and |
|
| |
retsina. Greece
offers a wide selection of wines, ranging from very dry to the
very sweet. |
|
| |
Talking
about food always makes me hungry ... nevermind it's all for a
good cause! |
|
| |
What follows is a
description of appetisers, greek specialties, desserts and
drinks. |
|
| |
Almost a meal in
itself, consisting of tomatoes, cucumber, green peppers, onions
and |
|
| |
olives with a slice
of feta cheese on top. Usually served with oil and a sprinkling
of oregano. |
|
| |
This is pink in
color and is a mixture of fish roe, mashed potato and
breadcrumbs served |
|
| |
with a slice of
lemon. It is usually eaten as a dip with fresh bread. |
|
| |
This is a delicious
dip, comprising yoghurt, grated cucumber, lashings of garlic and
a little |
|
| |
olive oil. It is
usually accompanied with fresh bread. |
|
| |
A wonderful
mouth-watering starter. Made from cheese that can either be oven
baked or |
|
| |
deep-fried, coated
in a lighter batter and served with a slice of lemon. |
|
| |
This is popular dish
and is made with courgettes, which are fried in a light batter,
generally |
|
| |
These are light
pastry pies filled with crumbly feta cheese. |
|
| |
This is a
traditional Greek dish made from minced beef, layers of
aubergine and sliced |
|
| |
potatoes, topped
with a bechamel sauce. |
|
| |
It consists of
pieces of meat grilled on a skewer with onions and peppers. It
can be served |
|
| |
as a main course or
as a snack inside pitta bread with salad. |
|
| |
Otherwise known as
stuffed vine leaves. These are made from vine or cabbage leaves |
|
| |
stuffed with
seasoned rice and mincemeat, usually served with lemon sauce. |
|
| |
Deep fried baby
squid, served with a squeeze of lemon. Again this can be a main
course |
|
| |
Fish is very
popular, but it should be noted that it is generally priced by
the Kilo and not |
|
| |
per portion, and can
be a a little expensive. Most fish restaurants will invite you
into the |
|
| |
kitchen for you to
see the catches of the day, in order to help you choose your
meal. |
|
| |
These are
just a few of the many delicious items you will find on most of
the |
|
| |
The Greeks have a
very sweet tooth and are not ashamed to admit it! You will find
many |
|
| |
pastry shops around
Kos town and its villages and of course you will find an
assortment |
|
| |
of desserts in
restaurants in Kos. |
|
| |
A sticky delight,
made from layers of flaky pastry, chopped nuts and soaked in
honey. |
|
| |
This is just as
sticky, but this one looks like shredded wheat filled with
sweetened nuts |
|
| |
and again soaked in
honey. |
|
| |
This is much simpler
than the others, but still very high in calories. A flaky pastry
crammed |
|
| |
Thick and creamy
Greek yoghurt covered with honey and nuts. Another way to serve
this |
|
| |
Good old cream
caramel dessert! |
|
| |
This is a general
term used for many varietes of sponge cake filled with cream,
and |
|
| |
covered with a soft
icing of chocolate, vanilla or coffee. |
|
| |
I'll have
3 now, and 3 to take away !!! |
|
| |
With a vast
selection of tavernas, restaurants and bars to drink in, your
holiday would not |
|
| |
be complete without
trying some of the local drinks. |
|
| |
The traditional
drink of Greece. Ouzo tastes very similar to Pernod and is
usually served |
|
| |
as an aperitif, also
drunk with the traditional "Meze". |
|
| |
The "firewater" of
all drinks. This drink is extremely potent and is made from
grape pips |
|
| |
and stems. You will
find a lot of the locals drinking this in tavernas, restaurants
and cafes. |
|
| |
The is a Greek
brandy with a kick! Available in 3, 5, and 7 star. The more
stars, the |
|
| |
The most common
beers in Greece are Mythos, Amstel and Heineken. Mythos is the |
|
| |
most popular of all
the Greek beers and its taste is somwhere in-between an Amstel |
|
| |
and a Heineken: not
as soft as an Amstel, and not as bitter as a Heineken. Try it ! |
|
| |
A variety of beers
are available in the bars and are usually displayed for you to
choose. |
|
| |
The local wines are
surprisingly good and relatively cheap. Dry, Medium and sweet
wines |
|
| |
are available. You
might like to try the following: |
|
| |
White:
Makedonikos, Olympias, Boutari, Lac Des Roches and Calliga |
|
| |
Red:
Makedonikos, Boutari, Amanti and Archanes |
|
| |
Rose:
Makedonikos, Boutari, Amanti, Archanes and Cava D'ora |
|
| |
This wine is made
with resin of pinewood added. The resin is made to chalk wine
barrels |
|
| |
to get the
distinctive taste. It is an acquired taste, and it is fat free! |
|
| |
This is a local
coffee and is served in tiny cups, with a glass of water.
"Sketo" is with |
|
| |
nothing added,
"Metrio" is medium / sweet and "Gliko" is very sweet. A handy
tip for |
|
| |
drinking Greek
coffee is to wait until the coffee powder has sunk before
drinking. |
|
| |
A bloke goes into a
pub, takes a seat at the bar, and orders five pints. The barman
gives |
|
| |
him an odd look
since the bloke's all by himself, but serves up the five pints
and lines |
|
| |
them up on the bar.
The bloke downs them ... One, Two, Three, Four , Five. He
finishes |
|
| |
the last one and
calls to the barman, "Four pints, please, mate!" The barman
serves up |
|
| |
four pints and lines
them up on the bar. The bloke downs them ... One, Two, Three,
Four. |
|
| |
Then he belches
loudly, sways slightly on the stool, and orders three more
pints. An one |
|
| |
after the other, he
knocks them back ... One, Two, Three. "Two pintsh, mate!" he
calls, |
|
| |
and the barman
places two pints in front of him. Down they go ... One, Two. As
the bloke |
|
| |
slams the last one
down on the bar, he says, "One pint, mate." So the barman fills
the |
|
| |
glass. The bloke
sits there, staring at it for a moment, trying to focus. Then he
looks at the |
|
| |
barman and says.
"Y'know, it'sh a funny t'ing, but the less I drink, the drunker
I get ..." |
|
| |
Enjoy eating & drinking at the
tavernas and restaurants on Kos ! |
